Nothing but Sunny Skies at the Malbone…

I think we have turned the corner! There seems to be a pattern of temperatures rising and sightings of people in the courtyard at the Malbone House. I can’t express how happy it makes me feel to see guests enjoying that area. It’s official that we have exchanged fireplaces for fresh air.

It’s a great time to be in Newport. Many people are taking advantage of our Experience Newport Package, which includes an hour daytime sail amongst several other goodies, which you can view on our website. It’s a great way to see Newport and let us do the planning for you.  In addition to several planned activities, you can spend your downtime at the Malbone enjoying the tea time snacks from 3-6 daily. Safe to say that our tea time deserves a moment of silence and the majority of our guest make sure they find their way back no matter what their day holds!Heritage_Rose_8_06

 

 

 

 

With the warmer weather many people are out walking Cliff Walk. The 3.5 mile path traces the edge of the ocean. It’s a must do in New England. The breathtaking views will be a permanent memory in your mind. If you’re really daring, I recommend you be there for sunrise. It’s stunning and worth losing sleep over:)
Fort Adams is another great jaunt while visiting Newport. It boasts beautiful views of the Newport Harbor and is home to the Newport Folk Festival and Newport Jazz Festival.  Fort Adams is the largest Coastal Fortress in the United States. There are amazing underground tunnels where officers and their families lived over a century ago. There are 180 years of history to view! It’s truly worth the stop. fort adams 2If you stay with us in May you can attend the Newport Oyster Festival. This event takes place May 21st-May22nd. Rhode Island is home to approximately 45 oyster farms. This is an opportunity to sample oysters from 14 local growers and restaurants. Ticket price also includes a beverage from one of the many vendors.  Plus you get to learn how to shuck like a pro! The event also has live music both days. Enjoy an “oyster hop” at local participating restaurants.    What’s better than oysters and a beer while strolling along Newport’s waterfront?

If walking isn’t for you, may I recommend the Newport Trolley Tours. There are several options to choose from, but I enjoyed Tour 1. It is a scenic overview tour that guides you through Newport’s historic buildings and restored homes. This tour also includes the stunning Ten Mile Ocean Drive and the massive mansions along Bellevue Avenue. It’s approximately 90 minutes and the the tour guides are extremely knowledgeable. I found it nice to sit back and let someone drive me around.

The Francis Malbone House is looking great! We have finished our spring cleaning, hung beautiful new draperies in one of the common rooms and completed the bathroom renovation in C4. Will is starting the process of making the grounds look fabulous with potted plants and flowers. Everything looks great and we are ready to enjoy our busy season catering to each and every one of our guests. Let the fun begin!

 

 

March into Malbone…

March…the month where everyone in Newport is Irish!  Of course, anyone familiar with our innkeeper, Anne Maria, understands that this is the only option for us here at the Francis Malbone House during March. She was born in Limerick, Ireland and is our in-house expert during Newport’s Irish Heritage Month. So, if you missed all the romance that surrounded us on Valentine’s Day, you certainly don’t want to miss the festivities in Newport during the month of March. Find your green attire and come celebrate with us. Who says March can’t be romantic? The fireplaces are still ablaze and our cozy beds and comfy rooms are extremely inviting. We have some great specials, including midweek room rates of $149.00 and $175.00, which include our gourmet breakfast and our most sought after,  afternoon tea.

The 60th Annual Newport St. Patrick’s Day Parade is on March 12th. This is not for the faint of heart. Newport residences wait all year to celebrate this day. It’s truly a great parade with many groups from the state participating.  The parade lasts two hours and includes Pipe Bands, Marching Bands, Fife & Drum Corps, Clown Units and much more. Following the parade many of the restaurants are in festive moods and look forward to your patronage. Of course, make your way back to the Malbone House for our Irish celebration! Our tea time is even more spectacular than usual.

 

 

The Preservation Society kept several mansions opened this winter. This was a change from previous years. I’m happy to say our guest have enjoyed touring the different homes  at this time of year. Currently, The Elms, The Breakers and Marble House are open daily. Beginning March 19th Chateau-Sur-Mer and Kingscote will be added to that line up.  It’s a great time to take advantage of this beautiful part of Newport’s  history before the busy season begins. I recently visited The Elms and took the Servant’s Life Tour. It was quite interesting to hear about life behind the scenes of Newport’s homes. I highly recommend taking this tour. It’s told from a completely different perspective.

 

Wind down your day with a trip to Newport Vineyards. This vineyard is New England’s largest grower of wine grapes. The tour is a 30 minute guided tour outdoors to the vineyard(weather permitting). During this tour you learn each step of the wine making process. Conclude the tour in the tasting room with a glass of wine of your liking. Don’t forget to stop at our front desk and ask one of the Innkeepers for a certificate for a complimentary bottle of wine.

 

We look forward to seeing our March guests. We have started spring cleaning to make sure we maintain the standards that you have come to expect.  We are taking out the tub in C4 and putting in a large shower, as many guests have requested.  We have made some minor repairs and have painted where needed. The house is looking great and we are ready to welcome and spoil you!

Welcome to February!

It is hard to believe that January is behind us! We rang in the New Year with many return guests, sitting by the roaring fires enjoying the array of delicious tea time food prepared by our chef. We also had the great fortune of welcoming many new guests to the inn. We thank you all for your patronage and for keeping this house very busy in January. It is hard to resist a quick get away with our spectacular weekly specials.

Anne Maria is back! We are so happy to have her presence here and our guests can rest knowing she didn’t run off to Ireland. Her beautiful family is doing well and the Malbone Family is so happy to have her back. While on maternity leave, her passion for cooking was ignited and below I share a recipe that guests have truly enjoyed.

February and 50 degrees? I’ll take it and hope it lasts through the 28th Annual Newport Winter Festival which is scheduled for  February 12th-21st.  It is New England’s largest winter extravaganza with over 150 events. The festival offers food, music, entertainment and much laughter!  The Chili Cook-Off is always my favorite. Come and stay at the inn, where everything is within walking distance.

While you’re here,  I highly  recommend the Newport Harbor Seal Tours run by Save the Bay.  The one hour weekend tour gives you the opportunity to take in 360 degree views of the seals resting on Citing Rock off of Rose Island and the Newport Bridge. If you choose the two hour ride, it includes a tour of Rose Island Lighthouse. I took this ride a couple of years ago and I am ready to go again. Dress warm and enjoy the beautiful tour through historic Newport Harbor. Summer in Newport is not the only time for a boat ride!

If you’d rather keep your feet on the ground, enjoy a walk through the quary meadow of Ballard Park.  The magnificent winter garden will sparkle with thousands of lights in a series of unique displays. The event is February 18th-20th  and is a beautiful sight to see on a dark winter’s night. Grab a hot chocolate, bring your hat and gloves and enjoy the stroll.

Blood Orange Cheesecake – Caoileann really enjoyed making this!

Ingredients

    • Crust:
    • 1 1/4 cups graham cracker crumbs
    • 1/3 cup butter
    • Filling:
    • 675 grams cream cheese
    • 3/4 cup sugar
    • 1/3 cup sour cream
    • zest and juice of one lemon
    • zest and juice of one blood orange (or regular orange)
    • 5 large eggs, room temperature
    • Topping:
    • 1 1/2 cups sour cream
    • juice and zest of one blood orange
    • 1/4 cup sugar
  1. Preparation

      1. Preheat oven to 350F. For the crust, melt butter and add to crumbs. Mix well and press into a ten-inch springform pan. Bake for about 8-10 minutes until slightly golden. Cool. Beat together cream cheese and sugar until smooth. Add citrus zest and juice. Mix well. Add eggs, one at a time, combining well after each addition, but not too vigorously. Pour over crumb crust and bake for about 40 minutes. Middle will still be slightly jiggly. Remove from oven and run a sharp knife around the sides, but do not remove ring. Cool 15 minutes on the counter. Meanwhile, prepare topping. Combine sour cream, citrus zest, citrus juice and sugar. Pour over slightly cooled cheesecake and let stand for half an hour at room temperature. Chill completely. Remove ring and serve.

Culinary News

Our Chef, Colleen, graduated from Johnson & Wales Providence Campus with a Pastry Arts Degree in 2013. She is such an incredible baker/chef. Guests are constantly asking us for recipes so we thought that we’d share a couple of favorites with you.

We seem to have had an influx of gluten free guests lately – we always try to make sure we have some treats at Tea time to offer. Here are two of our top gluten free recipes:

Flourless Peanut Butter Cookies – you don’t need to be gluten free to love these!

Ingredients

  • 1 cup natural peanut butter
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 1 large egg, lightly beaten
  • Coarse sea salt, for sprinkling

Directions

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F and place the racks in the upper and lower third of the oven.

In a medium bowl, mix the peanut butter, sugar, vanilla and egg until well combined. Spoon 1 tablespoon of the mixture about 1 inch apart onto ungreased baking sheets. Flatten the mounds with the tines of a fork, making a crosshatch pattern on the cookies. Sprinkle coarse salt on top of the cookies.

Bake until golden around the edges, about 10 minutes, switching the position of the sheets halfway through baking. Transfer to racks to cool. Repeat with the remaining dough.

Note: add a Hershey’s kiss to these for an extra treat!

Mediterranean Stuffed Mushroom

Ingredients:

  • 12 large mushrooms, cleaned and hollowed out
  •  2 tablespoons tomatoes, seeded and minced
  •  2 tablespoons roasted red peppers, minced
  •  2 tablespoons kalamata olives, rinsed and minced
  • 2 fresh garlic cloves, minced
  •  1 tablespoon fresh parsley, minced
  •  1/2-1 teaspoon oregano, minced(fresh or dry)
  •  fresh ground black pepper, to taste
  •  1 teaspoon fresh lemon juice
  •  2 teaspoons olive oil
  •  1/2 cup feta, crumbled
  •  minced parsley, to serve

 Directions:

Preheat oven to 350°F.

Lightly grease a cookie sheet or 13×9 baking dish.
Stir together filling ingredients: tomatoes through feta.
Spoon filling into cleaned mushroom caps and place them in prepared baking dish.
Bake for 20-25 minutes.
Place on a serving platter and sprinkle fresh minced parsley over the top of them – Serve with Grilled Chicken or Tuna for a wonderful summer dinner!
